Album Artwork
The artwork for Ed Sheerans album ‘+’ was created classically with pastels by an artist from London named Phillip Butah. In 1998 when Phillip Butah was only 16 he was the youngest prize winner in a competition named Young Artists’ Britain: ‘The prince of wales young artists’ award. Winning this award, he was encouraged to take art seriously, so he went on to study fine art at saint Martins college of art and design in London.  Ed Sheeran is also from London himself. ‘Phillip Butah is an outstanding draughtsman whose skills are particularly suited to portraiture. Apart from the accuracy and detail of visual appearance, Phillip’s drawings also capture the character and personality of the person in front of him.’ – Quote from his website.
Phillip, since he was a teenager, always used himself as a model for his drawings. He sketched himself from all different angles and different lights. He was always fascinated about how sight can change the angle of a head and how the colour or texture can affect the mood of a picture. Usually, he produces several drawings of a person to reflect different aspects of their personality.
His website states:  ‘Phillip Butah will personally travel to your home environment or to the location of your choice.’ For me, this shows how dedicated Philip is to his work and customers. It also states that he will take no longer than one hour per person and finish the rest in his London studio. His portraits are usually finished in three days, and he will personally frame it with a frame that suits your personality, eg colours and textures.
