Asylum Records is an American record label founded in 1971 by David Geffen, and partner Elliot Roberts, They founded their own management company. It was then taken over by Warner Communications (now the Warner Music Group) in 1972, and merged with Elektra Records to become Elektra/Asylum Records
Asylum Records history Asylum’s early releases were distributed by Atlantic Records. In 1972, Tom Waits, a folk singer signed with the label, releasing his debut, Closing Time, in 1973. Then in 1980, he released his fifth and final label named ‘Heartattack and Vine’.
The biggest name that Asylum ever signed was Bob Dylan, who was looking for a new label after previously falling out with Columbia Records. He recorded two albums with Asylum which were ‘Planet Waves’ and ‘Before the Flood’ and then he returned to Columbia, who reissued Dylans Asylum albums in 1981.
